A device for measuring tri-stimulus values like RGB and XYZ. Colorimeters are often used for monitor calibration and profiling. They read their measurements using three or more filters, and as such are not as accurate as spectrophotometers at measuring the true color characteristics of objects.

Real World Photoshop 6

SmartNote: 352
Type: Book
ColorGeek factor:
By Bruce Fraser and David Blatner

Photoshop 5.x is probably the first major publishing application to bring ICC color management to the masses (as in BIG groups of people). Photoshop 6.x has been upgraded to smooth out the complexities of managing color and offer powerful new features.

As with the "Real World Photoshop 5", these guys have written a great book that is indispensible as far as setting up and using Photoshop correctly so you get the expected results.

Profiling Monitors with ColorSync

SmartNote: 353
Type: TechTip
ColorGeek factor:
ColorSync 2.5 and later allows you to calibrate and profile your monitor by eye, with no special tools, and for free. This is not as accurate as calibrating and profiling using a colorimeter but it is considerably better than no profile at all. In fact, Performing this "by eye" can take into consideration ambient lighting conditions which hardware-based methods often do not.

To get started:

  • Go to Apple's ColorSync website and download the latest version of ColorSync
  • Install it
  • Go to your "Monitors and Sound" control panel and click on the "Color" button.
  • Click on the "Calibrate" button and follow the calibration and profiling guide.

At the end of the process, name and save your profile into the "ColorSync Profiles" folder in your "System Folder" and you"re done. Or perhaps more correctly, you"ve just begun.
