ColorSync is a standard method for developers to call the operating system when they want their programs to correctly manage color. There are also provisions in ColorSync that allow developers to write their own Color Matching Methods and also for the users to select different ICC profiles to use. In some sense, ColorSync is the glue that holds it all together, but it is also a standard, one that ships with every copy of Mac OS. That reassures developers, and end users alike that it will be present in their users? systems and solutions can be built around it. |

Profiling Monitors with ColorSync |

ColorSync 2.5 and later allows you to calibrate and profile your monitor by eye, with no special tools, and for free. This is not as accurate as calibrating and profiling using a colorimeter but it is considerably better than no profile at all. In fact, Performing this "by eye" can take into consideration ambient lighting conditions which hardware-based methods often do not.
At the end of the process, name and save your profile into the "ColorSync Profiles" folder in your "System Folder" and you"re done. Or perhaps more correctly, you"ve just begun. |

Finding the Right Profile |

Profile Central is constructed to allow you to search for profiles in three ways: By service provider, by service, or by device. If you are looking for a specific service-providing company, then either their name or click the "Browse" button to browse through the list. Once you find the service provider you are looking for, click on their name and you will be taken to their detail page. On that page are listed the different services they perform, the associated profiles and also a list of all the profiles they have contributed. If you are looking for a service, just check the box next to the desired service and Profile Central will return a list of service providers who offer those services. When you have found the provider you want, click on their name and follow the above instructions. If you are looking for profiles by device, check the boxes beside the desired device types and click "Search". Profile Central will return a list of profiles for each of the selected device types. Clicking on the profile name will take you to the Profile Detail page. See the link below for the next steps |

Once you have found the profile you want, click on its name and you will be shown the Profile Detail page. This page will supply you with detailed information about how the profile was created, which device it describes, and settings / substrates used in its creation (and which should be used along with the profile in order to get the best results) Click on the "Download" button to begin the download process. You will need to sign into the membership area (or become a new member and then be taken there) to begin the download. Once in the download area, click on the profile name and the download will begin. When the download is completed, ensure the profile has been unpacked and decompressed correctly and then move it into the appropriate folder / directory: - For Mac users For Windows users: You are now ready to start using the profiles. Some programs (like Photoshop 5.x) may need to be quit and restarted if they were running when you installed the profiles. |
